Bangalore City

Bangalore, the capital of the Karnataka, is fifth largest city in India. The exact origin of Bangalore is not known, but it is believed that the city was founded somewhere in the 16th century. The year 2000 saw the introduction of Information Technology in Bangalore and since then, the city has not looked back. It has reaped the most out of the IT Boom in India and boasts of the highest concentration of IT companies in the country. Today, Bangalore is known as ‘The IT Capital of India’ and “The Silicon Valley of India’. The Bangalore city is also very famous for its amazing nightlife. Some of the most happening discotheques and pubs of the country are in Bangalore, making it one of the most happening cities in India.

In the year 1120 AD, the Hoysala King, Veera Ballala ruled the Deccan plateau or the South of India. On a hunting trip in the forest he lost his way. After a long search he met an old lady in the forest who offered him shelter for the night and served him some boiled beans for dinner. To show his gratitude to this lady for having saved his life, the King constructed a town and named it as Benda Kalooru which means town of boiled beans. Later in 1537, a local chieftain, Kempe Gowda helped design this town and give it its modern shape.

Vijayanagara and Kempe Gowda

Kempe Gowda Modern Bengaluru was founded by a feudatory of the Vijayanagara Empire, who built a mud fort in the year 1537. Kempe Gowda also referred to the new town as his “gandu bhoomi” or “Land of Heroes”.Within Bangalore, the town was divided into market. The town had two main streets: Chickkapete Street ran east-west and Doddapete Street ran north-south. Their intersection formed Doddapete square — the heart of then Bangalore. Kempe Gowda’s successor, Kempe Gowda II, built temples, tanks including Kempapura and Karanjikere tanks and four watching towers that marked Bengaluru’s boundary.

The four watchtowers built at the time in Bengaluru are still seen today in the following places which include:

Lal Bagh Botanical Garden
Kempambudhi Tank
Ulsoor Lake
Mekhri Circle

Sultanate of Bijapur

It was captured by the Maratha chief Shahaji Bhosale, father of Shivaji, then working for the Adil Shahi sultans of Bijapur in 1638. During the siege of Bengaluru, Shivaji’s elder brother Venkuji was killed by Shahaji’s rivals, led by the Ghorpade of Mudhol, for which Shivaji was to later exact revenge.

Mughal Influence

After conquering the Sultanate of Bijapur, the Mughals under the commandership of Khasim Khan, then arrived in Bengaluru, which was then ruled by Shivaji’s brother Veankoji/ Ekoji Bhonsale as a jagir of Bijapur in 1686; Vyankoji retreated further south.

The Mughals in turn sold Bengaluru to the Kingdom of Mysore’s ruler Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar in 1689 for three lakhs which he had originally negotiated with Venkoji / Ekoji Bhonsle. Bangalore was given as a personal Jahgir by the then Woedeyar King Immadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar to Haider Ali made in 1759. But by 1761 he had become a de facto Ruler and was proclaimed as the Saravadhikari of the Kingdom.

Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan

When Hyder Ali died in 1782, his son Tipu Sultan deposed the weak Wodeyar, proclaimed himself Sultan. Under Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali the state progressed economically and trade flourished with many foreign nations through the ports of Mangalore. Several attempts by the British to capture Bengaluru were repulsed by the Mysorean Army, most notably in 1768 when Hyder Ali forced Colonel Nicholson of the British Army to lift his siege of Bengaluru.

Bangalore fort was captured by the British armies under Lord Cornwallis on 21 March 1791 during the Third Anglo-Mysore War and formed a centre for British resistance against Tipu Sultan, being incorporated into the British Indian Empire after Tipu Sultan was defeated and killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799). Bangalore is the permanent home of this Indian Army regiment since the mid-nineteenth century.

Wodeyars and British East India

Lady Curzon hospital in the Bengaluru Cantonment was established in 1864 and later named after the first wife of the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon.Upon the passing of Tipu Sultan, the Wodeyars returned to the throne of Mysore, and therefore Bengaluru, although only as figureheads. Bengaluru remained part of British East India until Indian independence in August, 1947.After Indian independence in August 1947, Bangalore remained in the Mysore State of which the Maharaja of Mysore was the Rajapramukh.Bangalore continued to be the capital of the unified and linguistically homogeneous Kannada-speaking new Mysore state that was created in 1956, and renamed to Karnataka in 1973.

From Airport to Bangalore City:

Buses Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) operates buses from various points of the city every 15 min to the Bangalore International Airport (BLR). A total of 156 buses ply to and from the airport. 40 of these buses are air-conditioned Volvo buses, called Vayu Vajra. The cost for each trip in these buses ranges between Rs 50-250 depending on the distance. This is the cheapest and an extremely convenient way to get to the airport moreover, this service is available everyday, day and night. While taking this mode be aware that you will need some one to pick you up from the bus stop or you will need a auto rickshaw ride for the last mile.

Airport City Taxi : These are air conditioned sedans which are licenced by the Airport to primarily provide connectivity between the International Airport to the city. The Taxis are usually Renault Logans or Toyota Etios models and sport a ‘Taxi’ top-sign for easy identification. Fitted with speed governors and GPS tracked, these are by far the safest and best way to get to the city from the airport.

The three companies which run these taxis are

  • MegaCabs
  • Meru Cabs
  • KSTDC

Radio Cabs Alternatively you can also take a radio cab. Only thing which you need to hire these cabs is mobile data. If your data is working, you just need to download their mobile app and book the cabs nearby. Most popular radio cab services in Bangalore are Uber and Ola. Their mobile app provides option of choosing the type of car, which varies from hatchback to sedan and their rates are also quite reasonable in comparison of Airport taxi. Typically it costs from INR 600 to 1000 to reach any location in Bangalore city.

When exiting the passenger terminal building, look for the large sign outside that says ‘Airport Taxis’ which will point to your left. Follow the sign-age till you see the taxi queue where valets will guide you to your taxi. On the way to the taxi queue, you may be approached by private taxi drivers who will try to get you to take their taxis instead. Ignore these unless you feel you can negotiate a rate cheaper than the airport taxi, and are willing to take the associated risk.

Pre-paid taxi Hertz, Carzonrent and Akbar Travels provide pre paid Limousine and car rental facilities through counters at the terminal building. These cost above Rs 1,200 to the CBD.

Self drive cars are available on self drive basis. There are three ranges of self drive cars – the compact category (Suzuki Swift), the intermediate range (Ford Fiesta), the standard category (Toyota corolla), Multi Utility Vehicles (Toyota Innova) and Sports Utility Vehicles (Ford Endeavour). These cars will be given to the renter with a full fuel tank and the car has to be returned with full fuel tank. A flexible pick up and drop off facility in town and at the airport will be offered.

Hotel pick-up Another option is to arrange with your hotel in Bangalore to have a driver pick you up at the airport. Some hotels, especially the higher-end ones, provide this service for free if you are staying with them. If it’s your first time traveling to Bangalore, this is the recommended way to get from the airport to your hotel.

BMTC Bus-Stand:

There are both government and private buses that run services to major cities like Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirupati, Hyderabad, etc. Buses can be a normal luxury bus, a Volvo A/C bus or a sleeper bus for night travel.

All intercity buses arrive and depart from Bangalore bus stand, which is located opposite the Bangalore city railway station. The bus station is named after the founder of Bangalore – Kempe Gowda.Kempegowda Bus Station, is more commonly known as the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand or the Majestic Bus Station. It handles buses that connect Bangalore to all major cities and states in south India. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), maintains bus services within Bangalore. The main bus stand is located opposite to the Kempegowda Bus Station. Unlike other metros, the display boards in the bus show the destination in the local language Kannada. But the bus numbers are mostly in English. If you don’t speak Kannada, you will likely need to get some help to get on the right bus. However, the newer Volvo buses are all equipped with electronic displays that display the destination and route numbers in both Kannada and English. Non-Volvo buses are being gradually retrofitted with these electronic displays; this should make bus travel much simpler if you are unfamiliar with the local language.

Train Station:

The Main bus terminal in the city is opposite City Railway Station. Bangalore is well connected by road with the rest of India.

Kempegowda Bus Stand (Inter State) in Bangalore is the Central Bus Stand, a 24-hour hub for buses plying all over South India.

There are services to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Goa. Bangalore is connected to India’s major cities through the National Highways – NH 4, NH 7 and NH 209.

Train Station
Bangalore Train Station

Bangalore has two major railway terminals. The Bangalore City (IR station code: SBC) railway station is situated in the heart of the city, opposite the Majestic Bus stand. Most trains, both local and long-distance, arrive and depart from here. The other terminal is Yeshwantpur Junction (IR station code: YPR) located on NH-4 (Tumkur Road). A few (mostly long-distance) trains arrive and depart from here. Two smaller railway terminals are Bangalore East (IR station code: BNCE) and Bangalore Cantonment (IR station code: BNC).Of late Krishnarajapuram (KJM) has become an important stop owing to proximity of IT companies and the ring road just passing close to the station and well connected by buses to major parts. It also forms the 1st stop for majority trains leaving Yeshvantapur towards Jolarpettai.

Bookings can be done at either the railway stations or at the Indian Railways booking counters located in major commercial residential areas. Booking can also be done online.

As with all Indian railway travel, have some patience for delays. Trains are usually on time (within 20 mins of scheduled time), but can sometimes be late. A digital departure board in the station will tell you what platform your train is on and what time it leaves.

After Reaching City You can use below transport modes:

  • Taxi Rentals – Uber , OLA , MegaCabs , Meru Cabs , KSTDC , Quick Cabs , BangaloreTaxis , MaduraiCarRental , TaxiGUIDE , Bookcab
  • Auto-rickshaw
  • Bicycle Rentals – Velo in village
  • Motorcycle Rentals – Wheelstreet , Dryve , Roadpanda , ZipHop
